Is Ashley Todd lying?
First a disclaimer… Let’s get one thing straight. I despise both major parties. That’s “despise” as in I’d like to see the 1,000 most influential Republicans and the 1,000 most influential Democrats shipped to the Hague for fair trials on war crime charges — followed by swift public hangings. Heck, I’m not even all that fond of my own former party.
What I’m about to say is not an “Obama supporter” thing because I don’t support Obama. I will confess that a lot of the attacks on Obama have been annoying the hell out of me lately, but only because I recognize the hypocrisy behind them and resent their shallowness crowding out substantive criticism of Obama (which I’d love to see more of). Hearing GOP idiots speak with dread of “socialism” after 8 years of their blood-drenched, mass-murdering “national socialism” galls me to no end, though.
I’ve even come to believe that there’s almost no such thing as an innocent Republican, much like there was no such thing as an innocent Democrat by the end of the Clinton administration. They are all accomplices to Bush’s crimes, with the exception of those who denounced them. Republicans are already crying crocodile tears for “free speech” and denouncing liberal “intolerance” because the majority of this country may not agree on much but has come to a near consensus that the GOP is full of shit, at least.
And they feel un-loved.
Punks.
So, anyway, folks have been getting all spastic and such over this story:
Pittsburgh police are investigating after a volunteer for the Republican campaign says she was attacked by a mugger who became enraged after seeing a John McCain bumper sticker on her car last night.
Mark my words. I believe Ashley Todd will eventually be shown to be a liar and that she put the wound on her face herself. I am absolutely convinced of this, after having seen photos of her wound. Why am I so sure of this? Because although I would never do such a thing myself, I can tell you that if I was ever driven by such an excess of political hatred (which I have a passing familiarity with) as to violently carve someone’s face up with a knife, it would be much messier. The photo looks like she did it herself in a mirror with an X-acto knife after numbing her cheek with ice — like giggling schoolgirls piercing each others ears at a damned slumber party. It is my opinion that Ashley Todd is lying her ass off.
UPDATE: Holy shit! I agree with Malkin!
UPDATE 2: On Oct 24 @ 1:39 pm US/Eastern this story about Ashley confessing to the hoax was published.

And besides — who the HELL uses a KNIFE in street crime these days, anyway?
I think you are right. I live in Pittsburgh and this incident occurred one block from where I used to live. I use that ATM regularly. I can’t say whether it occurred or not, but I can tell you that the victim has given contradictory statements to the police and according to her most recent statement, she passed out and didn’t know what happened to her–this was after they suggested she take a polygraph.
It was reported here as a mugging gone wrong on a person who was in town to work for McCain. That has translated into the national media as “Obama supporters attacking McCain supporters.”
Aside from the contradictory statements and the odd choice of carving a backward B (like looking in a mirror?) into a person’s face–a few things I find fishy.
That intersection is extremely busy–there is an active Catholic Church on one corner, a popular restaurant/bar on another corner, an excellent Thai restaurant on the other corner and the bank. In both directions their are a number of busy coffee shops, restaurants, and grocery stores. There is a ton of foot traffic in the evening. The neighborhood is working class and heavily Italian, and Pearl Street is densely residential. I honestly don’t see how it is possible that an African American male could mug someone, chase them down, beat them up, sit on them and carve a perfect, yet backwards B, on someone’s face at 9pm without a sole noticing.
She may have been mugged, but the rest of the story…doesn’t add up. But of course, I don’t expect the national media to investigate such things when sensationalism is so much more fun.
Being able to glibly ignore the Todd affair from my perch in Europe, I can’t help but be captivated by the image you sketch of 2,000 war criminals swinging in the wind. Now there’s change we can believe in, by golly!
