psychopolitik: Correct, though never right

Well worth the read: psychopolitik on why real libertarians ought to be considered more “left” than “right”:

A short sentence that will piss off many, then an explanation: A true libertarian will eventually sound like a “progressive”.

That explanation essentially puts forward a definition of the “left” as opposition to the status quo and the “right” as favoring either maintenance of the status quo or reinforcement of trends in the status quo that benefit the elite beneficiaries of statism.

The following seems to sum it up nicely.

…there really is no need for a “left” or “right” modifier for libertarianism, as left-libertarian would be redundent & right-libertarian would be contradictory. Libertarianism rejects the status quo & cheers its downfall, so at the LEAST it is center-left.

Now, granted, I do personally accept the label “left libertarian” these days, but an exhaustive explanation of that on my part would require elaborating on the convoluted history of the term, libertarian factionalism and lots of tedious details about the broader libertarian movement. I’ll save that for another time. Meanwhile, just check out the post.

  • Being a Left-Libertarian

By way of Brad Spangler I stumbled onto psychopolitik’s discussion of why libertarians are inherently left-wing. All of which was originally sparked by my own discussion of libertarianism at DailyKos! What goes around comes around . . .
    . . . there …
