KC Metro Earth Day celebration in Johnson County, KS
Over on BlogKC, the irony of local environmental group Bridging the Gap moving yesterdays KC Metro area Earth Day celebration to Johnson County, KS was recently pointed out.
Quote:
Environmental supporters will have to get in their cars and drive up to twice as far as last year, putting quite a bit more pollution into the air. Perhaps the environmentally friendly thing to do is just stay home this year.
While I can appreciate what the poster is saying, that’s not quite the way I see it, nor am I impressed with the attempt by BTG’s Mark Carr to defend the decision.
Bridging the Gap doesn’t have a monopoly on celebrating Earth Day. If they think JoCo is such a bright idea, fine. There’s no reason other people can’t commemorate Earth Day in their own way at a location they deem more reasonable next year.
One potential benefit of seeing things that way is this…
With a variety of smaller public celebrations scattered throughout the city, more people will gain experience with event organizing and grassroots networking. As one of several neighborhood events, participants would be more inclined to learn and benefit from the interaction; more likely to engage in spontaneous forms of social organizing and exchange of ideas. Wouldn’t that be better than just showing up at some carnival with an “eco” theme and expecting to be entertained?
