Santa Cruz Tree-Sitters and Rothbardian Homesteading
Let me reiterate…
Efforts to reclaim property from the state and state-allied actors, even temporarily and/or for the limited purpose of stopping that property being put to a particularly odious use, are virtuous acts that are fully compatible with a correct understanding of property rights, as the property of the state and state allies is fundamentally stolen property, and hence must be considered unowned if it can not be returned to its rightful owner(s). Even property that has been “voluntarily” donated to state institutions is still fundamentally up for grabs, as the state is itself institutionalized theft. The state can not own anything in any moral sense of ownership. All that it possesses is owed as restitution to its non-statist victims.
The tree-sitters in Santa Cruz may not think of themselves as “property rights activists”. They are, though. They are.
